Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist
Dr Simon Hew is a Melbourne-based gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist in public and private practice. Simon’s clinical interests lie in the early endoscopic detection and treatment of cancer and in liver, biliary and pancreas disease. He also has experience in all other areas of gastroenterology, including reflux, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
Simon is passionate about timely, high quality care and values excellent communication with his patients and referrers, offering practical suggestions in their management.
Academic and Professional Background
Simon studied medicine at Monash University, graduating in 2008 with honours and won the prize for clinical medicine. He completed his advanced gastroenterology training at Launceston Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Austin Hospital and at Monash Health and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2016. Simon subsequently undertook a fellowship subspecialising in interventional endoscopy, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and complex polypectomy. In 2019-2020, he completed a further interventional fellowship at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, where he gained an interest in image enhanced and third-space endoscopy.
Simon is currently a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist in the Department of Gastroenterology at Monash Health. He is actively involved in the Department and serves as the Clinical Lead at the newly established gastroenterology unit at Casey Hospital. Simon is invested in teaching and mentoring future gastroenterologists and has recently been elected to the Young GESA Committee, a national professional body representing the interests of early career gastroenterologists. He is engaged in clinical research and has published in high impact endoscopy and gastroenterology journals.
In addition to his public appointments, Simon has accreditation at Jessie McPherson Private Hospital, St. John of God Berwick and Frankston Private Hospital.
Outside of medicine, Simon enjoys spending time with his family and friends, working on his tennis backhand and keeping his gut stimulated in Melbourne’s restaurants.
